Steven Caras to release stunning new memoir in September 2026!

After the premiere of the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary Steven Caras: See Them Dance, former New York City Ballet dancer and renowned photographer Steven Caras began getting countless letters, all insisting that he write a book. And that’s exactly what he set out to do–no easy undertaking, he would soon discover.

At long last, Caras’s stunning memoir Through the Lens of a Dancer is finished, set to release on September 15, 2026!

“Throughout the book, I dive a lot deeper than I was able to do in the documentary,” Caras recently shared. “Personal and professional milestones and setbacks are revealed in intimate detail, beginning with my mock-ridden childhood and struggles with sexuality, moving on to my days as a dancer under the leadership of ballet’s towering genius, George Balanchine . . . and well beyond.”

About Through the Lens of a Dancer

At a young age, Steven Caras formed an almost unwilling passion for dance, telling his mother that “boys don’t do that” when prompted about his interest—yet it would be ballet that shaped the course of his life. Under the tutelage of legends like George Balanchine and surrounded by the form’s most accomplished professionals, Caras learned the art of ballet from the very best, eventually to become one of dance’s most distinguished photographers.

With the eye of a photographer and the deftness of a dancer, Caras takes readers through his multifaceted life journey with humor and candor.
