BBT spotlights Secretary of the Board Dr. Alyson Slater
This month, Boca Ballet Theatre spotlights Dr. Alyson Slater, who currently serves as Secretary on our Board of Directors! Dr. Slater is a BBT alumna who’s carried her love of dance forward into a career as a podiatrist and board certified foot and ankle surgeon. In this profile, we highlight her history with BBT and the profession that has helped her serve the dancers in our community!
Dr. Slater danced her first Nutcracker with Boca Ballet Theatre in 2001, starring as a Gingersnap. The experience performing onstage inspired her to become a regular student at BBT, where she trained until she graduated from Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts as a dance major in 2008. Though she didn’t want to pursue dance professionally, she knew she wanted to incorporate her love of ballet into her profession.
After graduating college, she found podiatry and realized that a focus in foot and ankle care could reconnect her to the art form she fell in love with as a student at BBT. “Dance medicine is a wonderful multi-disciplinary specialty that I love being a part of,” Dr. Slater recently shared. In addition to working per-diem at South Palm Orthopedics, in February of 2026, she opened her own practice called Pointe Foot & Ankle in Delray Beach.
Dr. Alyson Slater speaks to dancers at BBT’s The Directors’ Summer about foot and ankle health and injury prevention.
For the past few years, Dr. Slater has shared her expertise as a guest speaker in a special enrichment class curated for the dancers attending BBT’s The Directors’ Summer intensive. “I absolutely love doing it!” Dr. Slater said. “I have spoken to them specifically about how to incorporate foot and ankle care into their routine to maintain their health as dancers. The vast majority of injuries that dancers experience fall into my scope of practice. I teach them about healthy habits from hygiene to musculoskeletal conditioning and injury prevention.”
In addition to contributing to BBT as a guest speaker, Dr. Slater stepped forward to serve on our Board of Directors as Secretary. “A few years ago, I reconnected with a former BBT student from my year who encouraged me to consider joining the board,” Dr. Slater said. “I got involved because I wanted to play a larger role in the organization that was so foundational for me. Until leaving Boca, I did not realize just how unique the company is. I've been preaching its mission to anyone who will listen for years, so it felt like a natural transition.”
It is incredible to see former students like Dr. Slater carrying forward their passion for ballet in their professional careers as well as in service of their alumna mater: Boca Ballet Theatre! It’s the commitment and service of dedicated volunteers who understand BBT’s value that help us achieve our mission to positively impact students and audience members through the artistry of dance. We are so lucky to have Dr. Slater as a part of our BBT family!
